Charging your EV in Lisbon

Lisbon charges you to come in, not to stay: the two bridges over the Tagus take a toll northbound only, into the city, while street parking costs from under a euro an hour and nothing at all in the evening or at weekends. Its oldest quarters — Alfama, Bairro Alto, the castle hill — are closed to visitors’ cars, so the car is best left charging on the flat while you take the tram up. The city has nearly 2,000 public charge points; the same app and free card you use at home show the ones they cover today — more as operators join — with their live price, here and across Portugal.

What charging costs in Lisbon

Charging in Lisbon is priced per operator and per station, and the price for your account is the one the app shows before you plug in. Many of the city’s chargers add a price per minute to the price per kWh — the city’s own kerbside posts use it to keep bays moving — so the cheapest session is the one you end when the car is full. Around the charge, parking is cheap by capital-city standards: €0.85 to €2.10 an hour in the four colour zones since August 2026, on weekdays from 09:00 to 19:00 only, and free outside those hours. At the points easyCharging covers, the live price is shown up front, so you choose on cost, not guesswork.

Charging rules and practicalities in Lisbon

A few local things worth knowing before you charge in the city — what the bridges cost and when, how parking and charging bays work, and which streets a visiting car cannot enter.

  1. The bridges charge you in, not out

Arriving from the south, you cross the Tagus on the 25 de Abril bridge from Almada or the 17 km Vasco da Gama from Montijo — €2.25 and €3.40 for a car in 2026, paid at the booths by card or cash, and only on the way into Lisbon; leaving is free. The electronic-toll registrations for foreign plates do not cover the bridges, so just pay at the booth. Electric cars pay the same as any other.

  2. Parking by colour, and charging bays are for charging

Street parking is run by the city’s parking company, EMEL, in four colour zones — €0.85 an hour in green, €1.25 in yellow, €1.70 in red and €2.10 in brown — for at most four hours in green and yellow and two in red and brown, paid by app or at the meter on weekdays from 09:00 to 19:00. Lisbon’s free-parking permit for electric cars requires a Portuguese registration document, so a visiting car pays like any other. A bay signed for electric vehicles charging is for charging: a car parked there otherwise faces a fine of €60 to €300.

  3. The old quarters are closed to visiting cars

Bairro Alto, Alfama, the castle quarter, Bica and Madragoa are restricted-access zones: only residents, deliveries and permit holders may drive in, and access is controlled around the clock. The low-emission zone around the Avenida da Liberdade and the Baixa keeps older petrol and diesel cars out on weekdays and does not touch an electric car. Bus lanes are for buses and taxis — driving in one costs €120 to €600. See more on the Portugal guide.

How charging works in Lisbon

Create your account

Download the easyCharging app on Android or iOS and create your account. Add a payment method once and you’re ready to charge at every point the app covers, in Lisbon and across Europe — no Portuguese supplier contract, no local app, no second account.

Pick a charger outside the old quarters

Before you drive in, decide where the car will stay: check the app for a charger it covers near your hotel, outside the closed old quarters, and see whether it is free and what it costs right now — the price shown is the price for your account. Where it has none nearby, the newest fast chargers take a bank card.

Plug in, or tap the card underground

At a kerbside post, plug in with your own Type 2 cable and start the session in the app — and pay for the parking too on a weekday, since the bay sits in a paid zone. In an underground car park, where the signal often drops, tap your free RFID card on the reader instead. Watch the per-minute price and come back when the car is full.

Unplug and continue

Stop charging in the app, unplug and continue your journey. You’ll get a charging summary, and payment is handled automatically — no subscription, no monthly invoices.

Beyond Lisbon: one app for Europe

Leave the city and the same app and free card go with you — at the Portuguese points they cover, and home through Spain and France. One app, one free card and a live price wherever it has a charger.

Lisbon → Porto → Santander ferry (A1)

The road home: the A1 to Porto, about 313 km and €25.05 in tolls, then north-east through Castile to Santander, another 640 km, for Brittany Ferries’ sailing to Portsmouth or Plymouth. There is no charging on board, so arrive at the port with enough for the drive from the English coast; the app shows the chargers along the Spanish motorways before you leave.

Lisbon → the Algarve (A2 / A22)

South over the Tagus on the A2 to the Algarve — Faro is about 280 km — then along the coast on the A22, toll-free since January 2025 from the Spanish border to Lagos. Charge at the new high-power hubs in the A2 service areas before the coast, and check the app for chargers at the resort towns.

Lisbon → Sintra → Cascais

Sintra’s palaces are about 35 km out, and since March 2026 the town has restricted traffic into its historic centre: leave the car at a car park below and take the bus up. Cascais is 30 minutes along the coast, and its municipality alone has close to a thousand public charge points, so the car can charge by the sea while you walk.

Why drivers choose easyCharging in Lisbon

Built for a city you pay to enter, park in cheaply and explore on foot and by tram.

A map that grows

The Lisbon chargers the app covers, on one map with one account and a live status — and more of them as Portuguese operators join.

The price for your account, up front

Where a charger bills by the kWh, the minute and the session, the price for your account is the one you see before you plug in — no guessing, no surprises when you come back late.

A card for the car parks

Lisbon’s underground car parks often have no mobile signal. A free RFID card starts the charge at a compatible charger without the app.

No subscription for a city break

Pay only for the sessions you use. No monthly fee, no Portuguese contract — ideal for a few days where the car charges once and the tram does the rest.

Lisbon charging FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about charging an electric car in Lisbon — prices, parking and charging bays, the bridges, rapid chargers and the streets a visiting car cannot enter.

How much does charging cost in Lisbon?

Prices are set per operator and per station, and the app shows the price for your account before you plug in. Many chargers add a price per minute, and some a fee per session, to the price per kWh — so read the whole price card, and end the session when the car is full. Parking is on top on weekdays from 09:00 to 19:00, at €0.85 to €2.10 an hour depending on the zone.

Where are the rapid chargers in Lisbon?

About 300 of the city’s public points are DC fast chargers, around 40 of them 150 kW or more. The biggest cluster is an ultra-fast hub in an airport car park, with more in Parque das Nações by Oriente station, at the motorway exits on the northern edge and in a few central car parks. The big shopping centres mostly have slower AC points. The app shows which of them it covers, with live availability.

Do electric cars park free in Lisbon?

Not visiting ones. Lisbon gives fully electric cars a permit to park free in its paid zones, but it requires a Portuguese registration document, and the city plans to limit it for non-residents. A car on foreign plates pays the ordinary fee — only on weekdays from 09:00 to 19:00, with evenings, weekends and public holidays free.

Do I pay to cross the bridges into Lisbon?

Only on the way in. The 25 de Abril bridge charges €2.25 for a car and the Vasco da Gama €3.40, northbound into the city only, paid at the booth by card or cash; leaving Lisbon over either bridge is free. Electric cars pay the same.

Can I park at a charging bay without charging?

No. A bay signed and marked for electric vehicles charging is for charging, and a car parked there otherwise faces a fine of €60 to €300 and may be towed. The city’s own kerbside chargers also raise the price per minute once a fast-charging session runs long, so move the car when it is full.

Can I drive into Alfama or Bairro Alto?

No. Bairro Alto, Alfama, the castle quarter, Bica and Madragoa are restricted-access zones for residents, deliveries and permit holders, controlled around the clock. Park and charge outside them and walk, or take the tram or the funiculars up.

Does Lisbon have a low-emission zone, and does it apply to electric cars?

Yes, and no. Lisbon’s low-emission zone covers the Avenida da Liberdade, the Baixa and a wider ring around them on weekdays from 07:00 to 21:00, and keeps out older petrol and diesel cars, foreign plates included. A fully electric car may drive there freely. A stricter zone for the Baixa and Chiado announced in 2020 was shelved and never introduced.

Can I charge at Lisbon airport?

Yes. One of the airport’s car parks has a hub of ten 180 kW chargers, and AC points are spread across the others. The airport is about 8 km from the centre, so it is a good place to arrive full or to charge a hire car before you return it.
